Addressing Homelessness and Addiction in Jackson

In the heart of Jackson, Mississippi, homelessness and addiction continue to cast long shadows over our community. While the Central Mississippi Continuum of Care’s 2024 Point-in-Time Count identified 273 individuals experiencing homelessness in the region—down from 315 the previous year—local service providers like Gateway Rescue Mission encounter far higher numbers on a daily basis, serving all those who cycle through our doors each year amid the hidden realities of housing instability and crisis. Challenges remain acute in urban areas like Jackson, where unsheltered individuals often face harsh realities. Compounding this is the persistent issue of addiction; Mississippi ranks among states with high drug use, with opioid dispensing rates at 63.1 prescriptions per 100 persons in 2023, and overdose deaths having spiked significantly in recent years before a 23% decline between 2023 and 2024. These statistics aren’t just numbers—they represent neighbors, families, and lives in need of hope and healing.
At Gateway Rescue Mission, we’ve been a beacon of light in Jackson since 1948, committed to offering life-changing hope through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As a faith-based, nonprofit organization, we serve the physical and spiritual needs of homeless men, women, and children by providing essential programs focused on food, shelter, counseling, and discipleship. Our approach is holistic: we address immediate crises while guiding individuals toward long-term transformation, helping them overcome addiction, rebuild their lives, and rediscover purpose.
Meeting Immediate Needs: Emergency Shelter and Nutritious Meals
Homelessness often strikes suddenly, leaving people without a safe place to rest or a warm meal. Gateway Rescue Mission steps in with emergency services designed to provide stability in those critical moments.
Our Overnight Shelter is open seven nights a week for men over the age of 21, welcoming guests starting at 2:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. Here, individuals find a clean bed in a secure environment, daily showers, and hearty breakfast and dinner meals. This service not only offers respite from the streets but also creates an entry point for deeper support, where guests can connect with our staff for counseling and guidance.
Beyond shelter, hunger is a daily battle for many in our community. That’s why we serve nutritious meals to anyone in need. These meals nourish the body and foster community, reminding our guests they are valued and not alone.
Tackling Addiction: The New Life Program
Addiction can feel like an unbreakable chain, but at Gateway Rescue Mission, we believe true freedom comes through faith and practical support. Our New Life Program for Men is a six-month residential initiative tailored for men aged 21 and older battling drug addiction, alcoholism, or similar life-controlling issues.
This Bible-based program emphasizes spiritual growth, sobriety, and healthy habits. Participants receive biblical instruction, practical life skills training, and discipleship to build a strong foundation in their relationship with God. It’s not a clinical treatment but a transformative journey for those willing to embrace change. Many graduates emerge with renewed purpose, equipped to pursue employment, stable housing, and reconciled relationships. Through counseling and community, we help men break free from addiction’s grip and step into a brighter future.
